Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation is a completely inclusive community which believes that all people are created equal and b’tzelem elohim (in the image of God).
At NVHC, we include all people as human beings, regardless of gender identity/expression, sexual identity/expression, race, ethnic background, ability, or where they are on their Jewish journey. This underscores all that we do.
All of our clergy officiate at LGBTQ weddings. LGBTQ couples go through the same pre-marital counseling and have the same awesome ceremony as anyone else. Three of our clergy officiate at interfaith weddings; the path for each couple differs depending on the religious and spiritual needs of the couple.
NVHC works nationally with the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and locally with VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) to fight against LGBTQ discrimination, human rights violations, bullying, and hate crimes. The Reform Movement has been at the forefront of including LGBTQ individuals in communal leadership and all clergy roles for almost two decades.
We don’t currently have any LGBTQ specific programs or groups, but would love to start one if there’s interest!
